iconographic description:
a matron introduces a young woman to a bachelor brought by another man. The young woman stands very straight, the matron lifts her chin with one finger. Actor, playwright and designer, henry monnier helped illustrate la comédie humaine. His engravings of administrative morals, and especially his play scenes from bureaucratic life, clearly inspired balzac for his novel la femme supérieure, renamed les employés. The same references to the customs of their time often inspired the two artists in parallel on numerous subjects as we can see in the following extract: "madame de sénonches had displayed the flags of her most sought-after toilets. Monsieur du hautoy was in a black coat. Monsieur de sénonches, to whom his wife had written of the arrival of madame du châtelet who was to appear at her house for the first time and the official presentation of a suitor for françoise, had returned from monsieur de pimentel. ” [excerpt from lost illusions, by honoré de balzac]
