The companions on goethe's rhine journey in the summer of 1774: johann caspar lavater (1741-1801). Engraving by d. Berger. Famous as a preacher and as a philosophical and theological writer in zurich. An ardent admirer of goethe since the publication of "götz" ("a genius without equals"), he visited him in july 1774. Together with him and basedow, goethe undertook the brilliant rhine journey, which brought him particularly close to lavater. Later, due to differing views on religious issues, an estrangement arose, which ultimately led to a break. Goethe, however, created a beautiful monument to the former friendship in "poetry and truth". Unknown date
