four people with animal heads are out for a walk. First come two young women wearing veils, one a giraffe and the other a camel, followed by a couple formed by an elephant and a cane. We can recognize a bourgeois couple with their two daughters to marry. Excerpt from métamorphoses du jour (editions gustave havard libraire, paris, 1854): "without certainty, the scene takes place in a small provincial town, on a sunday, after vespers, between four and five in the evening, on the courtyard or on the mall [. . . ]you know that in all small towns there is a not very fortunate family, adorned with several daughters who will not marry, 1° because they have no dowry, 2° because nature has made them ugly now, when nature undertakes to make a woman ugly, she succeeds divinely, as in all her undertakings. If they are two sisters in this poor family, they have barely reached their thirties, immediately they are only known by this ridiculous name: the two without men.
