“Portrait of E.P. Razumova”, Mikhail Nesterov, 1936

Elena pavlovna razumova was born in saratov and received a higher medical education. During her many years of practice, she treated chukovsky, mandelstam, neuhaus, mukhina, and korin. An intelligent and talented person, razumova could not only heal physical ailments, but also skillfully heal the souls of her patients, and became a good friend to many. A great and strong friendship connected e. P. Razumova and the famous artist mikhail vasilyevich nesterov (1862 – 1942). A portrait painted in 1936 and located in the a. N. Radishchev museum is evidence of this friendship and deep respect. Portraiture as the main genre was finally established in nesterov’s work by the mid-1930s. The artist created portraits of his contemporaries, strong-willed and active natures, whose lives, according to nesterov, were a reflection of “their thoughts, feelings, and deeds. ” such are the famous portraits of academician pavlov, sculptor shadr, surgeon yudin. But nesterov retains an interest in the theme that was already defined in his pre-revolutionary works – the depiction of the secret movements of the human soul, the subtle, barely perceptible state of man. As before, for his “lyrical portraits” nesterov chooses female models, trying to find eternal moral principles, the ability to compassion, and a special spirituality in the female soul. The portrait of e. P. Razumova was created in 1936, when she was experiencing a difficult family grief. The seal of intense thoughts and worries fell on the face of the young woman. It seems that the model’s attention is directed to the interlocutor, but her eyes are full of sadness, focused on her own thoughts and worries. The color scheme of the portrait is restrained and strict, with cold tones dominating. The decisive factor is the contrast between the richly colored, “weighty” background and the light silhouette of the figure. M. V. Nesterov captured the unique individual features of razumova and at the same time emphasized in the appearance of his model what makes her similar to many nameless "nesterov" heroines, who remain beautiful even in grief. The intimacy of the image solution became truly meaningful in nesterov, did not deprive the portrait of significance, but, on the contrary, gave it a note of genuine sincerity and humanity. E. P. Razumova died on july 21, 1971. At her request, her significant art collection was transferred to the radishchev museum. Http://www. Radmuseumart. Ru/pages/index. Asp?id_pages=114&id_header=9.
