The pair of paintings is based on the two portraits by georges desmarées (1697-1776). The present pair of paintings reproduces, on a smaller scale, the highly representative portraits of maximilian iii of bavaria (1727-1777) and of his wife maria anna sophia, princess of poland and saxony, who married the bavarian elector in 1747. As the marriage remained childless, the old bavarian line of the wittelsbachs died out with maximilian iii joseph. The couple can be seen in representative state robes with ermine coats, medals and maximilian in armor. On the cushions next to them is the prince's hat, in maximilian's case with an imperial orb and a helmet with an open hinge. When reproducing the portraits, the artist paid careful attention to the different textures, reflections and mirroring of the individual elements, so that they unfold their full splendor even in this somewhat smaller format.
