The work represents joseph, son of the hebrew patriarch jacob, escaping and rejecting potiphar's wife, who intended to sleep with him. And although on the back of the work an inscription states that it is a preparatory sketch of the canvas of the same subject that esquivel painted and that is preserved in the museum of fine arts of seville, the comparison between both works has led some authors to believe that it is actually a preparatory sketch of another work different from the one preserved in seville, since both works differ in terms of the treatment and placement of the characters.
