'the flying dutchman' was the most successful thoroughbred owned by archibald william montgomerie (1812–1861), 13th earl of eglinton. This celebrated racehorse won all but one of his fifteen races. This painting derives from an original work by john frederick herring, snr. (1795–1865) sold at auction in 2016. The original canvas was engraved and published by j. Harris, london, in 1849. Date: 19th century.
