Staub-theatre-knoxville-1886-tn1

Detail from an 1886 map of knoxville, tennessee, usa, showing staub's theatre (center) along gay street. The theater, knoxville's first opera house, was built in 1872, and designed by architect joseph f. Baumann. It was demolished in 1956, and the first tennessee plaza is now located at the site. The "x" on the wall was added by the mapmaker to match the theater's listing in the map's legend. Date: 1886.
