iconographic description:
view of sainte-marie church, rue saint-antoine, 4th arrondissement. A staircase leads to the steps of the church topped by a dome with a lantern. On the right of the church, a wall with a high porch touches the hôtel de mayenne. On the opposite side, a 15th century hotel, owned by the visistation sainte-marie convent. Three men are sitting on the steps protected from the street by bollards. Historical commentary:
the sainte-marie church, formerly called notre-dame-des-anges chapel, was built by françois mansart between 1632 and 1634, the date of its consecration. The convent of the visitation sainte-marie to which she belonged extended to the east, to the entrance to the bastille and along this prison, to the porte saint-antoine, to the west to the hôtel de mayenne and to the south a few meters from the rue de la cerisaie. This convent disappeared in 1790 and its chapel was occupied by a republican club. In 1803 it was assigned to protestant worship. Institution: carnavalet museum, history of paris
