Coming from the church - scene on the bayou lafourche - sketched by a. R. Waud. Harper's weekly, 19 january 1867, page 40
accompanying text (page 46):
coming from church. Last year, upon ascension day, the bayous were so full that walking was almost impossible upon the roads, which were wet and muddy from the leakage of water through the levees. These were so thoroughly soaked that, even upon the top of them, there was more muddy than dry spots. However, being a holiday among the catholics, the residents were all out attending church in full holiday costume. These were so quaint, and the ladies so indifferent to appearances while engaged in keeping their clothes dry, that our artist seized the opportunity to make a characteristic sketch of the natives. The floods in the mississippi, and the breaks in the levees of that river, was the cause of the unusual rise in these bayous of western louisiana. Identifier: harpersweeklyv11bonn (find matches)
