pl. N°3 of the series “ceremony of political ashes”. See pl. N°1 (pl. 248 of number 120) and pl. N°2 (pl. 250 of number 121). Villemain and victor cousin, hidden under (wolf) masks and wrapped in large coats, mourn the fall of the monarchy which they previously defended. The handkerchiefs are decorated with green pear patterns. Behind comes kératry disguised as a green monster with two horns made from his hair. The incarnations of the various newspapers defending the regime carry the gratification, in the form of a fat man lying on a stretcher, whose body is made up of plaques with inscriptions. The constitutional as jocrisse jester. The journal des "debates" in medieval armor, the good man richard, "the monitor" as an old woman wearing a skullcap decorated with the tricolor cockade, the nouvelliste and montalivet wearing a pear-shaped helmet, an armband decorated with a fleur-de-lis and their faces painted in blue, white and red bands. The gratuity is accompanied by a flag bearing the inscription “gratification […] [gratifications] // granted for // the // shrove days”. His body is covered with gray plaques on which are read: “secret fund […] [secrets]”, “moniteur”, “to mr // vienn… // poet at // the court”, “bonhomme // richard”, “nouvelliste”, “au figaro”, “aux debates”, “france nouvelle”. His headgear bears the words “a l’imprime […] [imprimerie] // royale”. Finally, at the end of the procession, two legitimist and carlist newspapers embodied by two men disguised as madmen, followed by talleyrand, as a devil, leaning on a crutch (“a blessed devil, a bishop-courtier, the prince of périgord” in explanation). In the foreground, "mr roule", carrying two buckets supposed to contain wine. Person / character depicted:
