iconographic description:
the scene takes place during a social evening. Two men are playing cards seated at a table covered with a thick tablecloth and an imposing oil lamp. The player on the left has the head of a fox while the player on the right has the head of an old dog. The latter's wife stands behind him, she has a goat's head wearing an extravagant hat. In the background, two people are talking. The seated lady has the head of a monkey and the elegantly dressed standing man has the head of a peacock. Extract from métamorphoses du jour (editions gustave havard libraire, paris, 1854): "if you are so much as to cheat at the game, do it with spirit, what the hell! [. . . ] the wife of this stubborn old poodle, a good fool's paste, the obligatory target of the tricks of her rascally opponent, comes to denounce the merry-go-round"
