Imaginary and absolutely unreal view of the transport of antiquities from the herculanese museum of portici to the palazzo degli studi in naples: not only is the transport of colossal statues such as those represented simply placed on carts without encasing them or fixing them with ropes unthinkable; but then this celebration of the triumphal entry of the antiquities into the palazzo degli studi, with so much participation from the court and influx of people, never actually happened. Finally, the vision of the places, as given by the engraving, is upside down compared to the reality of the places, and should be seen in mirror image. (engraving by j. Duplessis berteaux, from: "voyage picturesque ou description des royaumes de naples et de sicile" by the abbé de saint-non, paris 1781-86). Date: 1778 (pubblicata nel 1781).
