Lyon. “la veue de lion descendat par la saosne” (“the view of lyon descending by the saône”), detail. Engraving by israel sylvestre, 1649-1650. Historical museum of the city of lyon, inv. No. 3383. 7. View from the right bank, towards the downstream of the saône, with on the right bank (in the background) the pierre scize quay (note the large number of houses built on the river level). On the left bank, between the ste-marie-des-chaînes convent (e) and fort saint-jean (seen partly against the left edge of the image), only a few houses line the road which runs along the bank. The granary of abundance was not built until the 1720s. The boats linked across the saône support one of the chains which block the river against incursions by criminals. This one is called “sainte-marie-aux-chaînes”. It connects fort saint-jean to the foot of the pierre scise castle and gave its name to the convent mentioned above. The other range is the st. George range, further up the river. Date: 1650.
