Comment: the representative medal shows a bareheaded bust without a beard and a high embroidered collar on the obverse. The young margrave is touching a jewel hanging from a necklace with both hands. The chest section is continuous. The writing is between double, raised line circles. In the centre of the reverse is the brandenburg eagle in a scrollwork frame with two masks holding a bunch of fruit. Above and below is a band of writing running all the way around. On both sides there is a heavily profiled edge. The example is made up of two silver plates. Regling described the kunstkammer piece as not embossed, but cast. Domanig (1893) compared it with the larger medal of charles v from 1547 (habich no. 2247). - the portrait of frederick of brandenburg does not necessarily suggest a man of the church when it depicts this young, fashionably and splendidly dressed dandy. In the inscription he is only referred to by the title of margrave. In fact, the second-born son of the brandenburg elector joachim ii and the saxon princess magdalene was appointed bishop of havelberg at the age of 18. The representative work probably refers to this event and the adoption of the motto. In 1551, the hohenzollern was appointed archbishop of magdeburg and the following year was confirmed by the pope as bishop of halberstadt. He was not able to enjoy his wealth and power for long. He died in his residence in halberstadt at the age of not even 22, where he is buried in the high choir of the cathedral. The epitaph for the young archbishop, created in 1558, was created by the brandenburg court sculptor hans schenck and is one of the berlin sculptor's major works. A comparison of the two portraits suggests that the medal may have been a portrait study for a grave monument. Frederick's early death led to rumors of a possible poisoning. The choice of the reverse image could refer to this. The fruit bouquets probably represent the fruits of the poisonous yew tree, whose branches, starting from the head of an angel of death, end in the head of a lion (?) lying in a deathly sleep. If this interpretation is accepted, the medal may actually have been created after his death. Literature: k. Domanig, the german private medal of the older period (1893) no. 110; j.
