The one on the left holds his umbrella under his arm. They are all middle-aged, with plump bellies and dressed in austere old-fashioned clothes, some have glasses, others have a cane or a handkerchief in their hands. All are wearing hats. Monnier and balzac, inspired by the same situations, often come together in their descriptions of the morals of their contemporaries, one through drawing and the other through writing. "several people were grouped at the end of the village, in the courtyard of a mean inn, located at the junction of the roads to nemours and moret, to see a carriage pass which was going quite slowly, because the marquise had come from paris with her horses. In the front of the carriage, the maid held a little girl who was more thoughtful than laughing. The mother lay at the back, like a dying person sent by the doctors to the countryside. The physiognomy the dejected appearance of this delicate young woman did little to satisfy the village politicians, to whom her arrival in saint-lange had given rise to the hope of some sort of movement in the commune. " [excerpt from the woman of thirty years, by honoré de balzac] themes / subjects / places represented: subject of society, morals, campaign, umbrella mode of acquisition: purchase institution: maison de balzac inventory number: bal 98-136. Date: 1827.
