The artist of parma origins francesco liani is documented in naples in 1755 and his training took place in the workshop of clemente ruta (parma, 1685 - 1767). In the bourbon capital liani was a court painter and created works of a historical and religious nature (see n. Spinosa, 'francesco liani, emilian painter at the service of the court of naples', in 'paragone', xxvi, 309 (1975), pp. 38-53), but especially portraits. Among the first works we remember the equestrian depictions of charles of bourbon and maria amalia of saxony kept in the museum of capodimonte and eight small portraits of their children, today preserved in the campanian museum of capua, without forgetting the countless effigies of the aristocracy that he painted throughout his career. His hand was responsible for the portraits of domenico de sangro, of the gaetano filangeri civic museum, of leonardo and restaino di tocco cantelmo stuart, of giovanni mastrilli, of the 8th duke of marigliano and his wife maria giustina filomarino della torre, works that fully show the quality of his art (see pisani 1996, nos. 33,34). Date: 18th century. Dimensions: height: 85.5 cm (33.6 in); width: 61 cm (24 in). Medium: oil on canvas. Collection: Unidentified location.
