The battle of trafalgar, 21 october 1805; 'second picture', the boarding of the 'san augustino' by the 'leviathan'
this painting is inscribed by pocock in ink 'second picture/ the boarding'. The ships are identified, left to right, in pencil as 'orion', 'africa', 'l'intrepide', 'leviathan', ‘san augustino', and 'conqueror'. This work also relates compositionally to a painting of the spanish 'monarca' (74) built 1794 striking the 'tonnant' at trafalgar, which is one of a pair of that engagement at trafalgar (24 x 36 in) probably painted for captain (later admiral sir) charles tyler of 'tonnant', sold at christie's maritime art sale, london, 29 october 2008, lot 29. As in this sketch, which is clearly for a similarly commissioned pair, the british ship is shown behind (to leeward) of the spanish vessel in much the same relationship. Exhibited: nmm pocock exhib. (1975) no. 98. The paper is noted as having a fragmentary whatman watermark. The battle of trafalgar, 21 october 1805; 'second picture', the boarding of the 'san augustino' by the 'leviathan'. Date: circa 1805. Dimensions: Mount: 198 mm x 239 mm. Collection: Fine art.
