iconographic description:
illustration for victor hugo's poem "la fête chez thérèse" from the collection "les contemplations", book i, xxii, representing the celebration, in the spirit of wateau, which the first stanzas describe: "the thing was exquisite and very well ordered. It was in the month of april, and on a day so sweet, that one would have said that love had made it on purpose. Thérèse the duchess to whom i would give, if i were king, paris, if i were god, the world, when she was only thérèse the blonde; this beautiful thérèse, with diamond eyes, had invited us to her charming garden. There were few of us. We saw prowling the grand staircases a dwarf stealing their purses from the riders. "
historical commentary:
the collection "les contemplation" was republished in edition hugues in 1886 and appeared in eighteen issues which were brought together in the second volume of the "poetic works of victor hugo ii". This drawing can therefore be dated around 1886, it serves as a model for the plate engraved by bellenger and placed inset, in the volume edition, between pages 16 and 17 (unlike the usual practice which includes the plates in the pagination). This is the only contribution by emile bayard for this collection, the illustration of which he shares with georges rochegrosse ("adam and eve", mvhpd0521), albert maignan and e. Ronjat for portraits. Themes / subjects / places represented:
contemplations (v. Hugo)
