Evan Harrington - 28 - Juliana Defeated, 29 July 1860

Illustration for chapter 31 of "evan harrington. " once a week, volume 3, page 113. The picnic is over. Juliana schemed to expose the harringtons as tradespeople, and contrived to have people who knew them show up at the pic-nic, including their mother. She did this because she was in love with evan and wanted to separate him from rose. But all her schemes failed thanks to the countess's brilliant tactics and lady jocelyn's broad-mindedness. "juliana saw rose go up to evan and take his hand, and make him introduce her to his mother. She turned lividly white, and went to a corner of the park by herself, and cried bitterly. ". Date: 29 July 1860.
