Historical commentary:
the universal exhibitions of 1889 and 1900 were the subject of an abundant production of printed fans sold as souvenirs. Great artists (degas, pissaro, binet) took part in this fashion and jourdain's watercolor may have served as a model for an edition of fans printed in color (see reference catalog, p 99).
