Appeared in april 20, 1872, issue of harper's weekly. Original print includes two sketches: interior of a country store (9 1/16 x 7), showing merchant at counter waiting on two black female customers with two white children looking on; and the emigrants' noonday halt (9 1/16 x 6 7/8), showing family of emigrants taking a rest from their wagon journey in the n. C. Mountains. The woman is smoking a pipe, and the man has an ax in his hand. There is explanatory text on the reverse side of the print.
