Postcard by photographer georg alpers junior from the a series with the consecutive number 34, cheaply reproduced in collotype around 1898. The view goes over the market square in the old town of hanover in the direction of dammstrasse (or bohlendamm). On the left is the city's old town hall with a market woman's stall, in the foreground the hase fountain. In the background on the right is the so-called duve house or haus duve with the then house number 13. The early capitalist merchant, building contractor, princely appointed brunswick-lüneburg oberbergfaktor, councilor and senator johann duve moved into the representative house in a prime location, built around 1550, in 1656. It was redesigned for the count of hardenberg around 1752 and acquired by king ernst august in 1837 - supposedly to create a street passage to the portal of the leineschloss. The palace-like building was later inhabited by prince solms. The photo shown here shows the ground floor business premises of h. Timmann, who later advertised his company, founded in 1862, in his catalogues as “germany’s oldest specialist shop for bicycles and sewing machines”. Date: circa 1898.
