historical commentary:
notre-dame de paris, illustrated by luc-olivier merson for the national edition of the complete works of victor hugo, appeared in 1889. The original drawings were part of the collection of the publisher émile testard before being dispersed during the 1891 exhibition, galerie georges petit (“illustrated catalog of the exhibition of drawings, paintings, watercolors, engravings by the main modern artists, for the illustration of the works of molière, victor hugo, balzac, georges sand, prosper mérimée, etc. ). Indeed, no drawing of this illustration appears in the second exhibition of the collection, in 1896. The largest was acquired by henri beraldi and bound into volumes, now kept at the museum, i. E. 41 drawings for the vignettes of the chapter heads (inv. 2018. 0. 3086. 1 to. 41) and 12 drawings for the plates inset (inv. No. 2019. 3. 1 to. 12). Acquired by an unknown buyer, this drawing was listed under number 1311 in the 1891 exhibition. It will be reproduced as the title vignette of the "first conference, november 20, 1891" published in 1892 in the "catalogue of the exhibition of drawings, paintings, watercolors, engravings composed for the illustration of the works of victor hugo, molière, a.
