Cruelty, Maerten de Vos, 1577

The female personification of cruelity (crudelitas) sits on a bag from which the collected grain spills out. She hands a bread with a fish to a dog, and a stone with a snake to a young child. In the tree behind her is an owl with a burning heart in its beak. On the left in the background a river with a rapid. Right in the background is a view of a village. A woman throws food to pigs on a field. In the margin a six-line explanatory poem in dutch, latin and french. Print published in antwerp by willem van haecht who also composed the text.
