iconographic description:
this scene is similar to the setting for jean-philippe rameau's lyric tragedy, dardanus, a play in a prologue and five acts presented for the first time in 1739, then reworked in 1744. In act iv, dardanus is taken prisoner after confessing his feelings to iphise, daughter of his rival king teucer. The lamentation of dardanus in his prison only appears in 1744. The theme here is a pretext for the composition of an architectural view. In the foreground, a cut to a gallery allows us to see the prisoner. Historical commentary:
work linked to the lyric tragedy dardanus, music by jean-philippe rameau, libretto by charles-antoine le clerc de la bruère. Play in five acts presented at the royal academy of music on 11/19/1739.
