Design for an illustration to daniel defoe's 'an essay in the history and reality of apparitions'; scene depicting the apparition of an old baronet to his son jack to prevent him from fighting a duel with his elder brother tom, the father wearing contemporary dress and a full-bottom wig, standing beneath a tree, holding a sword, with his son jack, and in the distance, the father and son shown again. 1727; formerly attributed to hogarth. Pen and brown ink, with grey wash engraved by jan van der gucht (one of six plates) for 'an essay on the history and reality of apparitions'. Date: 1727. Dimensions: Height: 179 mm; Width: 97 mm.
