Harpignies bought a box of oil paint in 1844. Countering his father's ambitions, he trained with the landscaper jean-alexis achard. He traveled to france, flanders, the netherlands, and germany on the banks of the rhine, before reaching italy in 1850. In his diary, he spoke of his enthusiasm: “this is indeed the country i had dreamed of […]. I loved the form, it exists there par excellence as everywhere in the roman countryside; that’s where i understood her well, and she was my guide throughout my career. » this watercolor is one of the artist’s first. “it was in this year 1851 that i began to seriously paint watercolors. I was never shown anything, i left on my own. » it perhaps represents the banks of the tiber or the rock of nazons painted a quarter of a century earlier by corot. Returning to paris in 1853, he exhibited for the first time at the salon with a view of capri and met troyon and corot, whom he venerated. He cultivated originality, as evidenced by his writings: “ah, makers of pig ponds and boaters; uncompromising realists, painters from the banks of the marne and oise and other hackneyed subjects, go and see the poussin valley or the egeria valley, or the farnese isola so little known to foreigners, there you will see real landscape. » he made a second trip to rome between 1863 and 1865.
