Frescoed wall from the tablinum (room 19 ) in the house of the small fountain in pompeii. Translated plate description by emil presuhn: "a singular grace dominates in the decoration of this little tablinum; but unluckily so many beauties, remaining in the same place, have largely vanished. We have reproduced a side wall, while zahn ii, 95 depicted the longitudinal wall opposite the entrance. The plinth is black, as frequently seen, with ornate plants: lines of brown color relate it to the pillars of the middle zone, whose compartments, of the finest blue, give the whole wall the main tone. Worthy of observation in the frieze is that slightly marked tree, which reveals itself in the aerial view across the hanging architecture. A wide stucco cornice contours the wall toward the ceiling. The middle picture depicts some tragic masks: beside it lies a trumpet and a patera can be seen on the threshold of the window. H. 1745. In the two side paintings in the form of a medallion, eroti with the bacchic thyrsus are seen. The two country paintings in the frieze could not be more distinctly reproduced in the small dimensions of our plate. Date: 1877.
