Illustration for chapter 34 of "evan harrington" {once a week magazine, volume 3, page 197). Evan harrington has just told lady jocelyn that he forged the letter that caused her to eject one of the guests from the house. Lady jocelyn is attempting to pass just judgment on him, made difficult because evan has always, previously and now, given signs of honesty and clear conscience, and it is unusual for someone to spontaneously confess a crime they're not suspected of (she's right to be perplexed by his confession: in truth, he's making honorable amends for something his sister did). Date: 18 August 1860.
