The indian mutiny 1857-1859 stereoscopic portrait of charlotte, viscountess canning (1817 - 1861) photographed with an unknown lady companion and dr lecky during the aftermath of the indian mutiny. Viscountess canning was the wife of charles, 1st earl canning, governor-general of india during the mutiny. She arrived in india in 1856 and accompanied her husband to calcutta, where she found life restrictive and isolated but actively supported the new art of photography. Lady canning died of malaria in 1861 and was buried at barrackpore, west bengal. Date: between 1857 and 1859.
