This character, whose resemblance and costume are very exact, was painted from life in 1834. M. B. , originally from le puy, was a well-bred man who, after a long stay in paris, where he was established and married, came, in the first years of the restoration, to dig a small hermit's cave on the road to clermont, two kilometers from le puy. The cold water offered to the thirsty traveler turned into alcohol, as soon as the small change received in exchange made it possible to raise a modest floor on the enlarged cave. Mrs. B. Having come from paris to join her husband, the small drinks business lasted until 1836, a time when, seeing himself abandoned by fashion, the hermit sold his establishment, resumed bourgeois costume and returned to paris with his wife. - don, in 1834, by the author.
