Sargent print of solar eclipse in China, G. F. Sargent, 1 January 1836
Original painting would have depicted (responses to) some eclipse of the 18th or early 19th century. Exact eclipse depicted is unknown (perhaps 1802, 1814, but possibly 1842?). G. F. Sargent apparently produced this print in 1836 (four years before he was known to be active?). Buzzfeed says: "this 1836 print shows chinese astronomers observing and measuring an eclipse of the sun using a telescope and other instruments. ". Date: 1 January 1836.
