Yoshitsuya Nii-no-ama, Utagawa Yoshitsuya

Japanese woodblock print by utagawa yoshitsuya; print title nii no ama, from the series mirror of warriors of our country (honchō musha kagami); date 3/1856; 10. 75" by 14. 25". The print depicts nii no ama, the grandmother of emperor antoku, jumping over board, when she saw that the battle of dan-no-ura was lost. Antoku tennō was according to tradition a rebirth of a dragon-king’s daughter and here she is returning to her father. Date: 1856 (Ansei 3), Edo period.
