Front: senatus - budissin [the council of bautzen]. Helmeted city coat of arms surrounded by inscription. Back: discipulis / recte / facientibus / offert [intended for students who act correctly]. Inscription in four lines, surrounded by a circle. Comment: school medals or school prizes were awarded in wearable or non-wearable form to students with outstanding achievements. In 1778, the bautzen city council decided to issue a school prize and approved 6 thalers annually for it. The design for this was provided by christoph jeremias rost, the headmaster of the bautzen gymnasium, who had been in office since 1750. The city council officially adopted the design in 1778 and the awards of the medals, known as the "council prize", can be documented with names without interruption since 1794. For financial reasons, initially only one award was made per school year. If the conditions were the same, the winner was decided by lot. Later, several medals were awarded per year, or in times of war or when the requirements were not met, the award was waived. From 1821, the council award was given to high school graduates who had 'received the first grade in science and morals'. Originally, the school award was in the shape of a cliff. One such piece is in the bautzen city museum and comes from the erbstein collection (erbstein collection no. 15838). Later, the pieces were minted in medal form. In 1904, a new die was ordered, which was used until the 1930s. In 1904 (4th form) eleven silver medals were minted, and in 1908 and 1912 ten silver medals each. The stamp for the 2nd form (dot after budessin) was made in 1837 and the 3rd form (colon after budissin) was made by the engraver christian joseph krüger in the dresden mint. The files on the council premium in the 20th century provide information on the awards and the correspondence with the mint. In 1921 a school premium was also minted in muldenhütten for the bautzen secondary school to mark the school's 50th anniversary. The bautzen grammar school, where the council premium has been awarded since 1778, exists today as the 'philipp-melanchthon-gymnasium' and the bautzen secondary school as the 'schillergymnasium'.
