iconographic description:
the most widespread image of the peasant world in the united provinces during the first half of the 17th century, following the inventions of peter brueghel, was that of the fair, the best representative of which was adriaen van ostade. Over the course of the 17th century, the fair broke down into a series of scenes which isolated several aspects: peasants seated at tables, loving couples, groups engaged in a dance. Cornelis dusart represents these popular entertainments in the spirit of his master. The game of bowling naturally finds its place there: nine square pins whose value depends on their location litter the ground, while a fairly drunk player prepares to shoot (louvre, 2017, n° 70, p. 180-181). genre scene, inn - tavern, game of skill
