historical commentary:
the original plaster (musée d'orsay) was modeled in september 1873 during carpeaux's penultimate stay with alexandre dumas in puys near dieppe. It was exhibited at the salon of 1875, in homage to carpeaux, who was seriously ill at the time. Themes / subjects / places represented:
