Hans rostgaard was bailiff at elsinore, denmark. When the area was occupied by sweden in 1658, he served as liason between the danish king and a dutch fleet, sent to reinforce the defences of copenhagen, then under siege by the swedes. On the 29th of october the dutch fleet successfully passed the fortress of kronborg and then fought a hard battle against a swedish fleet in the sound, eventually defeating it and reaching copenhagen.
