French scientists joseph louis gay-lussac and jean-baptiste biot - ascending from the garden of the conservatoire des arts et métiers (wikisource) - reached an altitude of 4000 meters on 24 august 1804. Ascending without biot gay-lussac reached a new record of 7016 meters a few days later, on 16 september.
