Eckersberg executed the painting after a sailing trip with the corvette "najaden" in july 1833. The trip first went to bornholm and then south around møn, falster and lolland to the south funen archipelago and on to the great belt (carefully described in the diary; eckersberg's diaries, 2008, p. 551-55). Eckersberg started the journey on 7 july 1833 and he disembarked in nyborg on 20 july and then took the steamer to korsør and traveled by horse-drawn carriage back to copenhagen and was home again on 22 july.
