Self-portrait with portrait of paul gauguin, dedicated to vincent van gogh - "à son copaing [slang for "for his fellow"] vincent, 1888"
van gogh had asked bernard for a portrait of gauguin, but bernard did not feel able to create such (gauguin, 20 years older [twice the age of bernard!], was already famous at this time). Van gogh however was totally fond of bernard's painting, for its simplicity, and compared it to "a genuine manet". Gauguin painted, to "compensate", a self-portrait "with portrait of bernard" in same year. Both paintings are held by vgm. Object Type: painting. Genre: self-portrait. Date: 1888.
