iconographic description:
the scene takes place in a courtroom. On the left, the plaintiff is seated, his hands resting on the pommel of his cane, he is represented with an antelope's head. His lawyer stands in front of him, he pleads on a platform, a paper in his hand, he has the head of a parrot. The clerk, in the background, sitting at his table, notes the lawyer's speech, he has a cat's face. The four magistrates present are dozing on their chairs, they have the heads of marmots, the judge is a lion. Excerpt from métamorphoses du jour (published by gustave havard libraire, paris, 1854): "let us plead, it is a very fine trial, the parrot resumes; i answer for success. They all say so. The day of the hearing, our goat presents himself and demands the sentence. The lion presided; next to him, quietly plunged into sleep, three judges assisted him. From the land of marmots they arrived, it is said. The cat, the one of the boots, smeared paper with that beautiful hand that no human calligrapher ever equaled.
