Lydia édith eustis was born in new orleans (united states) on november 27, 1871. She is the daughter of allain eustis and anaïs de sentmanat (saint manat). His family, of marigny and eustis, are two of the founders of new orleans. His maternal grandfather, bernard de marigny, developed the faubourg de marigny and the north coast of the city after being president of the senate of the state of louisiana. His paternal grandfather, george eustis, was a benefactor of the university of louisiana (now tulane university) and founder of the pontchartrain railroad. His father allain eustis was honorary vice-consul in brazil and his brother james biddle eustis was a judge advocate during the civil war and chief justice of the supreme court of louisiana for many years, a member of the house of representatives and a member of the louisiana senate and then ambassador to paris. The young lydia eustis spent her youth in paris and new orleans, surrounded by diplomats. Fluent in three languages, lydia eustis embarked on a career of twenty years as an accomplished soprano, having studied for years with mrs marie trélat (1837-1914) at the paris conservatoire. She has performed in leading theaters across europe and the united states, where she met her husband, jonkheer john loudon (born march 18, 1866 in the hague and died november 11, 1955 in wassenaar), a dutch diplomat in beijing, london, tokyo, paris and washington. He was appointed minister of foreign affairs in the hague. John loudon and lydia eustis were married in paris in the 16th arrondissement on january 29, 1906. The couple had no children. Lydia édith eustis has a sister, anita maria eustis, wife of georges kinen, social singer and also a pupil of marie trélat. The two sisters frequently sang in the aristocratic salons of paris, including that of lord and lady henry standish, in the early 1900s.
