Friedländer (early netherlandish painting, i, ed. N. Veronee-verhaegen, leyden, 1967, p. 66), a sixteenth-century portrait formerly in the gemäldegalerie der staatlichen museen, berlin-dahlem, which coincides precisely with a drawing in the arras codex, bibliothèque municipale, arras, would appear to be the closest interpretation of the lost original. The present painting appears to derive from that early copy.
