Christoph wilhelm hufeland (1762 - 1836) physician, engraving by f. Müller after the painting by fr. A. Tischbein. Personal physician to carl august in weimar (and also goethe's doctor) and professor at the university of jena, since 1801 at the university of berlin. From a disadvantaged position within the medical profession, he worked through practical work as a doctor, organizer and writer ("macrobiotics"). In weimar (1791 etc. ) he was a member of the friday society, a private scientific-literary circle headed by goethe.
