The Sacrifice, John Goldar, 1767

The Sacrifice, John Goldar, 1767

Satire on a rich old man procuring a young woman. The old man seated at a table, wearing in indoor cap and a loose robe, a crutch at his side indicating gout, is holding a purse in one hand and with the other clasping the wrist of an elaborately dressed young woman. She holds a handkerchief to her eyes as though weeping as she is presented to the old man by a procuress who looks down at the old man while pointing to the young woman's exposed breast. On the table is a volume of "the art of love", with a pair of pince-nez, and bottle of "viper wine" thought to re-vitalize the elderly; behind the table by the curtains of a bed(?) a monkey grasps a cat. On the wall is a painting of a biblical scene with the sacrifice of a lamb. In an oval frame in imitation of stone work. 15 october 1767 etching and engraving. Date: 1767. Dimensions: Height: 333 mm; Width: 377 mm. Medium: paper. Collection: British Museum. The Sacrifice (BM 1876,0708.2522 1)
