"adoration of the mystical lamb by the celestial court" (c. 1683), by bento coelho da silveira, in the st. Roch museum (museu de são roque). The composition shows a progressive gradation of the figures on different planes, thereby giving notable depth to the panel. The representation of the mystical lamb, surrounded by celestial musicians, is a clear allusion to the lamb of god described in the book of the apocalypse (ap. 5:6,8), commonly identified with the person of christ as an innocent sacrificed victim. It was the society of jesus who most spread the symbology of the lamb or “agnus dei” in portugal, a theme very often repeated in spanish painting from the "siglo de oro" era (zurbarán, juan de roelas, baltazar gomes figueira, josefa d’óbidos). Object Type: painting. Genre: religious art. Date: circa 1683. Collection: Museu de São Roque. Adoração do Cordeiro Mistico pelas Santas Mártires (ca.1683) - Bento Coelho da Silveira
