William wheelwright (guillermo wheelwright, in chilean and argentine historiography) played an essential role in the development of the steamship and railways in chile and other parts of south america. In 1838, with the help of the government of chile, he founded the pacific steam navigation company, which began operating on october 15, 1840, taking care of naval trade between the cities of valparaíso and callao.
