Characters: a man crosses the street trying to make the birds that peck between the paving stones fly away. Behind him, two men, equipped with tools, are cleaning the gutter. A flower seller, guiding her harnessed donkey loaded with two baskets, a milkmaid, sitting on her donkey, her feet in baskets loaded with pots of milk, a seller carrying a basket on her head and a cart full of hay on which a woman is seated, approach. Birds peck at the roadway after the flower seller passes by. A sleepy man, leaning on an axe, watches the flower seller pass by while a man, holding a trowel, is about to enter an "estaminet / eau de vie, cog- / -niac, double biere / de mars" and another man sleeps in front of the establishment. The street has a "epiceri[e] on each side of the street, a "boulan[gerie] currently opening, a "magasin / coule[. . . ]" at number "24", a wine merchant, whose facade is decorated with bottles and from which a man emerges, at number "26", a "cafe des arts", a store called "riz / au lait" and a "cafe / port[e] / s. Denis". The "rue / st. Appo / line" leads to the right onto rue saint-denis. An inscription on a facade reads “me leblanc / sage femme”. People, early 19th century fashion, headdresses and hats. The arch of the porte saint-denis has the inscription "ludovico magno" and is decorated with weapon trophies, male and female river allegories and a battle scene.
