iconographic description:
a group of onlookers seen from behind. Men, women and children observe a barker holding a riding crop and his assistant. A large curtain unfolds behind them. Actor, playwright and designer, henry monnier helped illustrate la comédie humaine. His engravings of administrative morals, and especially his play scenes from bureaucratic life, clearly inspired balzac for his novel la femme supérieure, renamed les employés. The same references to the customs of their time often inspired the two artists at the same time on numerous subjects as we can see in the following extract: "the first floor of this house, which contains four rooms each provided with a bed and the meager furniture necessary to justify the word garni, was rented to people obliged to come to soulanges by the jurisdiction of the bailiwick, or to visitors who were not accommodated at the castle; but, for twenty-five years, these furnished rooms no longer had for tenants as acrobats, fairground merchants, sellers of remedies or images, traveling actors or traveling salesmen. " [excerpt from les paysans, by honoré de balzac]
